MELBOURNE, Dec 28 AAP - One of two cyclists struck by a car on Christmas Eve has died in a Melbourne hospital.

Sean Brindle from Western Australia, 35, died in The Alfred Hospital on Saturday night after sustaining life-threatening injuries when he and his brother were knocked off their bikes by a car while riding along Beach Road at Mentone.

The pair were struck from behind by a white Toyota sedan about 7.40pm (AEDT) on Christmas Eve.

Beach Road is a popular route for both recreational and professional cyclists.

Police have spoken to the driver of a Toyota sedan, a 31-year-old Mentone man, who stopped about 600 metres from the scene of the crash, but no charges have been laid.

A police media spokeswoman said on Sunday investigations were continuing into the crash.

The death takes Victoria's holiday road toll to 11.

The state's yearly road toll now stands at 304, compared to 327 at the same time last year.
